An Active Mind v. A Lazy Mind

Allen Earle explains why he is an atheist in an excellent, personal essay. He’s an example of a person who questions his beliefs and looks actively at the world around him.

Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, on the other hand, tells us in this video that “faith defines me” and “I don’t need to wake up every day wondering, what do I need to believe?”

Is thinking too much work for him? By implication he’s admitting that fact-based knowledge leaves him worried about what to believe.

I don’t even know how to make sense of such a statement because faith is only needed where there is no knowledge. It’s a sort of counterfeit, made-up knowledge. With regard to religion, it is a set of prepackaged beliefs.

It’s so much easier to just make up the truth or just accept the beliefs of others rather than to actively look at the evidence to find it, just as it’s easier to hit Dunkin’ Donuts for a few donuts and coffee in the morning instead of planning and preparing a healthy breakfast.
