Is Obama Like Bush?
Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama paid a visit to Seattle yesterday. He also gave an interview to the Seattle-PI.
This quote caught my eye because it is so similar to George W. Bush:
In his book “The Audacity of Hope,” Obama talks of coming to his Christian faith as an adult, and voices impatience with those on both sides of the country’s cultural divide.
“One thing we’ve tried to do is talk of faith in this campaign … to reach out to the evangelical community,” he said Tuesday night.
At the same time, however, the Illinois senator spoke of America in terms of a much larger religious tent than that courted last week by Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.
“We are not simply a Christian nation,” Obama said. He described America as a religious mosaic that includes Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, and that “we are also a nation of non-believers.”
Obama emphasized his friendship with evangelical leaders, and pledged to pursue “common ground” using the secular bully pulpit of the White House. “You can disagree without being disagreeable,” he argued.
George W. Bush came to his born-again Christian faith as an adult as well after experiencing problems controlling drug and alcohol use in his college days. Obama has made a similar transition, admitting to early problems with drugs and alcohol and now proclaiming his faith.
His faith-based view also puts him on common ground with Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and every other prominent candidate running for president in 2008 including Ron Paul whose faith-based views corrupt his libertarian philosophy.
It is important to remember that faith-based beliefs are not backed by evidence. People who brag about being people of faith are bragging about accepting ideas as facts which are not proven or provable. One of the legitimate criticisms of Bush is that he has made some disastrous decisions based on information that was not backed by any evidence.
If Obama is being honest about his belief system, we can expect the same hubris and arrogance that we’ve had from Bush when he holds something to be true that is not supported by evidence.
