Quantum Quotes of the Day

Posted in Quotes, Science on November 29th, 2006 by Chip Gibbons

It seems hard to look in God’s cards. But I cannot for a moment believe that He plays dice and makes use of ‘telepathic’ means (as the current quantum theory alleges He does). – Albert Einstein

However I cannot seriously believe in [quantum mechanics] because the theory is incompatible with the principle that physics is to represent reality in space and time, without spookish long-distance effects. – Albert Einstein

Daniel Craig is Ready for Nude, Gay James Bond

Posted in Film, Gay Interest on November 29th, 2006 by Chip Gibbons

Daniel Craig Nude pictureOh-La-La Paris reports that actor Daniel Craig, the most recent incarnation of James Bond, is ready for a gay James Bond who does full-frontal nudity.

Craig has done both nude and gay in before in a movie called Love is the Devil.

Very, very sexy man!

UPDATE 11/1/09
After hearing about this movie for so long, I finally got to see it using Netflix streaming video. Besides running around almost naked in several scenes, Daniel Craig gives an excellent performance in the film, but the story itself is so depressing that it’s a hard movie to watch. It’s a nihilistic downer.

Craig’s buffed body is about the only thing fun to watch about this film.

Quantum Snake Oil

Posted in Health, Religion, Science on November 29th, 2006 by Chip Gibbons

I saw something on the TV last night about a 20-year-old named Adam who calls himself DreamHealer(TM). He’s making a fortune selling the idea that he can heal people, or they can heal themselves, using the principles of quantum mechanics.

Adam is a gifted distant energy healer and best-selling author of three books about his work. His techniques are described in his first book, “DreamHealer- His name is Adam” and specific tools to increase our own healing abilities are given in “DreamHealer 2-Guide to Self-Empowerment”. An interactive DVD has just been released which brings this method to life entitled, “DreamHealer: Visualizations for Self-Empowerment”. A third book was released in Canada by Penguin Books in March 2006 entitled, “The Path of the DreamHealer”. All books will be released in many languages world-wide. Adam combines his First Nations background and experiences healing amongst indigenous people and others with his channeled insights about the science behind healing.

In his books and workshops he explains how our minds, through intention, directly affect our immune systems. We each can develop skills to direct energy in re-establishing health, as we seek to achieve a higher level of consciousness. The academic theories of quantum physics come to life with his accounts of his direct experience of the interconnectedness we all share.

Adam uses energy healing in a unique way to merge the auras of all participants with healing intentions. Then he uses holographic views to energetically affect through intention those present. His full-day workshop contains two group treatments.

He claims to use “quantum holograms” in the healing process. From FAQ:

How is it done?
Every living thing on this planet has its own Quantum Hologram (QH). Every QH is connected, therefore we are all connected. The QH holds every bit of information about you. Some individuals are able to access this information. The QH theory states that a change to local matter instantaneously affects the same change to an identical non-local object. So when Adam connects to someone’s hologram he is connecting to the energy information for that person’s body. It can be done over long distance with the use of an image of the person.

I’ve never encountered the term “quantum hologram” in any of the books, articles, or courses I’ve taken pertaining to quantum mechanics. He uses just enough truth and jargon from quantum mechanics to make his “theory” sound like it’s scientifically based. See his “science” page.

So what is a quantum hologram? From FAQ:

A quantum hologram is what Adam sees when he connects to an individual’s energetic system. It can consist of many different layers such as skeletal-muscular view; the bodies organs; nervous system and different magnifications on these views.

Keep in mind that physicists, including people like Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein, who have devoted their entire lives to studying classical physics, math and quantum mechanics, do not agree on an interpretation of the “meaning” of quantum discoveries.

Adam does not subject his work to the scientific method. From the FAQ section:

Why don’t you take the James Randi test?
James Randi is a Professional Magician, and also a Professional De bunker with his own rules. My feeling is that he is trained to make people look bad, even when they are doing very well. He can give them the illusion of looking bad, and as they say, “It Is Only In The Eyes Of The Beholders.” This field of healing is too serious to put in the hands of debunkers. If there are objective scientists who are interested in proving anything then we are interested.

An article posted on the DreamHealer(TM) site does not indicate there is a genuine interest in scientific studies of Adam’s claims:

“Many of the miraculous ‘healings’ attributed to Dreamhealer seem to be simply the result of poor logic, errors in critical thinking, and the common uncertainty of medical knowledge,” says an e-mail The Palm Beach Post received from Skeptical Inquirer.

That’s “the official journal” of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), a nonprofit scientific and educational organization founded in 1976 by Paul Kurtz, Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan, among others.

“Despite the fact that Dreamhealer has never proven his powers under controlled conditions, he claims that what he does can be explained by science. In fact, many such studies that have been done tried to find this effect, and all of them — including prayer — have failed. If Dreamhealer in fact can prove his abilities scientifically, he would be the first to do so,” CSICOP wrote.

[Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar] Mitchell says it is the way tests are done — incorrectly from his view — that fails to get the results required to convince skeptics.

He further claims to personally have been healed of disease twice through psychic healing, and one of those times was with Adam.

If science can’t prove religious claims then there must be something wrong with science, right?

We’ve heard that one before.

If science is so suspect and inadequate, why work so hard to make is sound like your claims are scientifically valid? Because most people know that it was science that gave us the knowledge to cure diseases and put men on the moon.

Covering his ass, Adam does not advise people to change their current medications. From FAQ:

Should I change my medication for Adam’s treatment?
Absolutely not. Any changes to your medication should be discussed between you and your doctor.

Like scientists who believe in creationism, Adam wants to have his science and eat it too.

According to the TV report I heard, Adam’s seminars bring in about 500 people at $100 per person. In addition, books and DVDs are sold. That’s going to be more than $50,000 in on day in revenue.

The real tragedy is that all that money is not being spent on good science to find cures for diseases. It’s being handed over to someone who uses the pretense of science to sell people on the idea that his methods are beyond what science can measure, which puts it squarely in the realm of religion and voodoo.

Adam claims that his methods are backed by quantum physics. So I encourage everyone who gives money to Adam to give an equal or greater amount to the quantum physicists at your local university for the purpose of studying Adam’s claims.

After all, if you buy the idea that Adam is using the findings of quantum physics to heal (I don’t), then you should give quantum physicists even more money than you give Adam. More discoveries in the field of quantum mechanics will only further advance the field of quantum healing. Right?

A First For the Ferry

Posted in Bainbridge Island on November 29th, 2006 by Chip Gibbons

In the four and a half years I’ve been riding the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry, I’ve never seen the ferry turn around. Every time I have ridden it, it just shuttles back and forth between downtown Seattle and the island with the “front” and “back” always facing the same direction. The galley is always on the Seattle side and the bathrooms are always on the Bainbridge side. One side of the boat always faces north, the other always faces south.

Until yesterday.

I was on an afternoon run from Bainbridge to Seattle and shortly after leaving the dock the captain announced that he would be spinning the boat around before making the trip across the sound and would spin it around again before docking in Seattle.

Why?

They wanted the sun, which shines only on the south side this time of year, to melt some of the ice on the north side of the boat.

The weather is just crazy. Last night the temperature got down around 18 degrees, which broke a record. There is more snow in the forecast. People in Seattle don’t know how to drive in it.

While the main roads on the island were sanded and clear yesterday, many back roads were a solid sheet of ice. I saw more than one car stuck in a ditch and temporarily abandoned.
