Brat Boy School on Brokeback Mountain
Brat Boy School has some reservations and insightful comments about the promotion for Brokeback Mountain.
I feel as if I am riding some roller coaster ride that just goes on and on and on. Now I am talking about Brokeback Mountain and its push to entice everyone to watch. The reason I am comparing it to a roller coaster is because it seems as if they are trying to wrap the movie appeal in many boxes. I have seen the scandalous box, the gay box, the gay sex box, the love story box, and water it down for all audiences box.
While I am sure I will go see the movie at some point, I just wanted to share my thoughts regarding the hype. I have heard the actors state in their interviews that they were proud to stretch their skills to play a gay character. Everyone involved has talked about the power of the story and their motivation for being involved. Then I have also heard the actors talk about how horrible it was to kiss each other. It’s not a big deal but there are times where it strikes me as a typical hetero “I am so straight” defense.

Speaking of genies that are out of the bottle, let’s look at the awards promotion. There are some camps running around talking about how brave the actors are for portraying a gay character. How cutting edge the movie is for pushing a gay love story into the mainstream. However, their early awards promotion material focuses on a picture Jake Gyllenhall and his wife from the movie. Why not use a picture of him and Heath Ledger doing some cowboy tongue wrestling?
I have voiced similar reservations in my previous posts about Brokeback Mountain, which I’m planning to see next Sunday.
