Bush Unveils Bird Brain Flu Plan
President Bush unveiled his plan to fight a flu pandemic that does not yet exist. It will cost the taxpayers $7.1 billion, at least for starters.
WASHINGTON - President Bush outlined a $7.1 billion strategy Tuesday to prepare for the danger of a pandemic influenza outbreak, saying he wanted to stockpile enough vaccine to protect 20 million Americans against the current strain of bird flu.
The president also said the United States must approve liability protection for the makers of lifesaving vaccines. He said the number of American vaccine manufacturers has plummeted because the industry has been hit with a flood of lawsuits.
Bush said no one knows when or where a deadly strain of flu will strike but “at some point we are likely to face another pandemic.”
The president, in a speech at the National Institutes of Health, said the United States must be prepared to detect outbreaks anywhere in the world, stockpile vaccines and anti-viral drugs and be ready to respond at the federal, state and local levels in the event a pandemic reaches the United States.
Why only 20 million vaccinations? What about the other 275,734,134 million Americans? (U.S. population is 295,734,124 per CIA estimate as of July 2005)
Everybody has to pay for the plan but only 20 million will benefit from it? Well, that sounds like your typical Bush plan doesn’t it?
Who will choose who gets the 20,000,000 million doses of vaccine?
In my post, Bird Flu Droppings, I suggested the following scenario:
Furthermore, it’s very possible that a deadly flu could become a WMD.
Scientists could alter the genetic makeup of a virus like the bird flu so that it is easily passed from human to human. Then they could create a vaccine against it. After vaccinating themselves and those allied with their political goals, they could unleash the deadly virus upon the world.
Not only would they survive after killing off any unwanted portions of the human population, they could get very rich in the process.
This could be Bush’s way of dealing with environmental problems like global warming. Get rid of the people.
He also wants to insure that that vaccine makers operate without potential liability. Will that protection apply to cases where they are just plain negligent or reckless?
