Vertical World - Seattle
Verticle World is good place to have fun and get a good workout.
I had the opportunity to try out this gym through a class arranged by the Seattle gay/lesbian outdoor activities group OutVentures.
Last night I met with Karla, another member of the group, at the Vertical World Rock Climbing gym in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood.
Unfortunately, Joel, who did all the hard work of organizing this event was held up at work and unable to take part in the class. He did show up later to check in with us.
Because there were only two of us, our instructor/student ratio was 1/1. Karla and I, who were both novices, had a private class with Kim and Mattie, two of the great staff members at this facility. Both instructors were very knowledgable and taught us the basics of knots, especiallly the all-important “figure-8,” how to strap on a harness, how to use the other equipment and the meaning us such phrases as “on belay,” “belay on,” “climbing,” “climb on,” “take,” and “gotcha.”
Then we took turns climbing and controling the rope.
Both Karla and I were exhausted after two hours but we both agreed that it had been a blast. On one hand it was too bad that more people didn’t show up, but on the other, it just meant that the two of us got all that personal attention from the staff and got to spend a lot more time climbing than if it had been a bigger group.
They even have a gym in Kitsap County in Bremerton.
Great people. Lots of fun. We each had to pay $45 for the class, which included all the instruction and equipment that we needed for the two-hour class.
