Chris Allbritton Awaits Transition

My man in Iraq, Christopher Allbritton writes that Americans, including reporters like himself are being kept under “hotel arrest” and/or strongly encouraged to leave Iraq as the U.S. prepares to turn over control to the Iraqis. Well, at least for appearances.

He notes that Iraqis don’t seem bothered by the idea of martial law. They have become adapted to living without freedom under Saddam’s dictatorial rule. It sounds like going back to something similar would make them feel right at home.

Some of you may remember that on more than one occasion I said that U.S. soldiers shouldn’t be fighting for freedom for those who didn’t value freedom enough to fight for it themselves.

How tragic it will be if democracy doesn’t take hold in Iraq (I have my doubts) and the people to back to the future.
