Dean Keeps Pluggin’ After “Scream”

Makeoutcity links Halley’s Comment who explains why she’s sticking with Dean:

I’d like to stop trusting Dean will step in shit again. That’s for sure. I’d like to trust that he will continue to tell us the truth and fight to get this country back from the aristocracy and return it to common working people. I think he tells such painful truth about what is really happening in America, many people would rather look away and see pretty ads on TV that play pretty music and make them feel warm and cozy.

Dean needs to stop being so shrill and scary. I know these are scary times the country is going through. I know he feels a moral responsibility to wake us up, but I’d rather wake to a warm cup of coffee than a siren going off.

I can’t get too excited about any of the Democrats running. But I am really pissed at how the media played Dean’s post-Iowa scream over and over again. Last week, Diana Sawyer on Good Morning America [watch the video report], demonstrated using video and film footage that the scream which sounds so loud and annoying when we see it on TV, was inaudible to most people in the room. It sounds loud because Dean was using a directional microphone which is designed to isolate his voice from the background noise of the crowd.

When Sawyer played tape that was shot from inside the crowd it was very obvious that as the crowd began to cheer louder and louder at that rally, Dean raised his voice more and more to be heard above them. By the time he got to the end of his litany of states, and “on to the White House,” then the scream, not a single word he said could be heard above the screaming crowd. Dean’s microphone was blocking out the sound of the crowd so in the tapes played on TV you got the impression that people could actually hear him screaming. The fact is, they couldn’t hear anything he was saying.

It’s just a great example of how the media picks up on something sensational, or distorts the truth in a sensational way, in order to use the tape for their own purposes. The fact that the version of Dean’s scream played by the media did not accurately convey what happened, did not stop them from playing it more than 700 times. They’re still playing it.

Dean was also on Meet the Press this morning and made the point that he’s still the frontrunner in the number of delegates that he has. Halley linked to CNN which documents that fact.

Dean is now playing on the fact that Kerry is as addicted to special interest money as George Bush. But then so is Dean. While Dean talks about average Americans and how they don’t count, he fails to point out that it’s the process itself that has written them off. Individuals don’t count and cannot compete with huge, well-funded mobs of special interests. If you want to matter in all that corruption, you must join with a mob; much like kids in ghettos or in high school must join with a gang to avoid being picked on. We’d all like to believe that it’s more dignified than that, but the simple unadulturated truth is that it’s not.
