Religion = Death #2
The death toll from God’s dreadful Christmastime terrosit act, the 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the Islamic Republic of Iran has now topped 25,000 and is expected to increase:
More than 25,000 bodies have been retrieved since Friday’s 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook the city and surrounding region in southeast Iran, according to provincial government spokesman Asadollah Iranmanesh.
“Many, many more people remain buried under the rubble, increasing fears of a much greater death toll at the end,??? Iranmanesh said.
Some officials have expressed fears that the death toll could rise as high as 40,000. More than 100,000 people reportedly are homeless.
This is not the first time that Iran has lost tens of thousands of lives to such violence:
Aid poured in from around the world after President Mohammad Khatami appealed for help from anywhere but Israel. In contrast, Iran rejected offers of international assistance when a quake killed 36,000 in 1990.
The traditional sun-dried, mud-brick construction of the houses doomed many occupants, as it has for centuries in quake-prone Iran. Heavy roofs, often sealed with cement or plaster to keep out rain, sit atop mud-brick walls that have no support beams. When walls crumble, roofs smash down, leaving few air pockets and crushing or suffocating anyone inside.
Now let me be blunt! Religion is based on the premise that an individual can be superior simply by proclaiming that he holds a certain set of beliefs, being obedient and going along with the crowd. It is a poison that destroys the greatest natural resource on the planet, the human mind. It should come as no surprise that a country that is run by Islamic fundamentalists has lost at least 60,000 human lives due to earthquakes and the people respond to such loss and pain with a statement like this:
Tahereh Taherian, a housewife, said she had lost 60 family members in the quake. “God is testing us,??? she said. “I’m thanking God because one of our sons has been left
Reality does not suffer fools gladly; and evolution is merciless is wiping foolish genes out of the gene pool when it is allowed to do its job. People who reject reality to the extent that they live in mud huts on major earthquake faults are supposed to die.
These disasters will continue as long as people are encouraged to believe in things that don’t exist, while rejecting what does exist.
While President Bush has included Iran in his axis of evil, he is now rushing to send disaster relief which will in the end prop up the Iranian religious government by diminishing the tragic consequences of their collective religious insanity. In addition, how much of that aid could end up in the hands of religious terrorists if Iran is, in fact, part of the axis of evil as Bush claims?
Will Bush be the man to point out that mysticism and the ignorance and suffering that go with it are at the root of this human tragedy? Warning: Do not hold your breath while waiting for that to happen; it will be hazardous to your health.
