Heidi Fleiss: In Defense of Prostitution

Posted in Courts and Law on August 25th, 2003 by Chip Gibbons

In a fascinating article in the magazine, Legal Affairs, Heidi Fleiss makes a strong case for the legalization of prostitution. I must disagree with her, however, when she argues that one reason the government should legalize prostitution is for the tax dollars. It is absurd to advocate the legalization of consensual sex for money while suggesting that a third party like the government should be allowed to take a portion of the proceeds by force.

She argues that getting the pimps out of the business will make it safer and more profitable for women because the pimps steal the prostitute’s income, but then she suggests that it’s OK if the government takes it by force.

The article provides interesting details about how much some men are willing to pay for sex.

Three Libertarian Candidates in California

Three Libertarian Candidates in California Recall Race

There are three Libertarian candidates running in the California Governor Recall Election.
Ken Hamidi, State Tax Officer
John J. “Jack” Hickey, Healthcare District Director
http://www.smokersparty.com/, Cigarette Retailer

There are probably other candidates with Libertarian values running in the race as Republicans or Independents. A review of some of these “libertarian” candidate platforms might lead some to conclude, as I did, that they are libertarians in name only. Anybody who advocates diminishing the power of special interests while proposing new tariffs has a basic problem with logic. Tariffs exist to give one group an advantage in the market at the expense of another; that is not a laissez-faire principle.

As I find more information on candidates who support individual liberty as opposed to government intervention in every aspect of our lives, I will pass it along.

To a rational mind, “notable” candidates would be limited to those with the most intelligent ideas. But intelligence is not notable or even admirable in an political process based on irrational premises.
